Bridging the Gap Between Trans and Non-Binary Adults and Children
As a (probably cisgender) parent of a trans or gender diverse child, it only seems natural to look to the experiences of the adult trans and non-binary community to deepen your understanding and learning. However, because these adults have had a very different experience than most of our kids, there can be some areas that could be helpful for us to explore together.
Is it feasible to find an adult mentor for my child? What should I look for?
I’d like to deepen my own knowledge. Is it okay for me to ask an adult trans non-binary person questions? What should I ask? Are there landmines I should know about?
I’ve had some tough experiences when I’ve tried to interact with trans people because they say I am a “cis ally” and shouldn’t try to educate others. They say I should leave that to the trans community. I have to advocate for my child all the time. How do I address that?
My family is mixed race. I’m white and my child is a person of color. How do I learn more about the intersections of race and gender and how do I find a mentor for her?
We will explore these questions and any others you may have.
Gender Diversity’s Aidan Key will present and moderate this Extra Credit.
